Another Goodwood Revival – been and gone. Only 362 sleeps to the next one.

I suppose this is one way that I plan my year, what happens between the Revivals, which as Gordon Sheddon said to me, “I look at the calendar and hope that Revival is marked up.”

My 17th this year. I missed the second one. This year I worked with Classic Car weekly on a driver portrait story. I loved every minute of it. Right up my street. Asking drivers the same few questions and receiving the answers. All different, but one underlying similarity that Goodwood Revival although is proper racing, the drivers do ensure that if there is a gap they would normally go into, they just might not here. They all want to be invited back and they all respect the spectators and the private race track that belongs to Lord March.

One interview was …. Well, I interviewed Jason Plato on a bed in the drivers mess. Hilarious as I interviewed everyone on that same bed – only… let’s just say Jason was… Jason! We caused a stir and everyone enjoyed the ‘show’!

I took part in the Land Rover parade on Friday and to be in Hue, with Roger Crathorne was fabulous. We discussed a variety of things over the two laps, but something I loved was that he too wanted to buy an MGA (for I am organising to buy one) but when he handed over the money to the chap, the chap’s wife cried and the money got returned to Roger and he could never buy that MGA. We did discuss Land Rovers and that ridiculous central steering wheel concept. Roger said,

“The engineers took one look at that drawing and didn’t even let it get into their thoughts.” It comes from the tractor idea, of the central seating position, but for the road it would simply be useless.

I enjoyed ‘forcing’ the owner of Leica to watch the St Marys (part 2) and TT races, although force is rather overboard, for Dr Kaufmann loved seeing my friend’s Alfa Romeo GTA driven by Alex Furiani (and Frank Stipler) race, and the TT, well, who doesn’t enjoy that race? I often think the start down to Madgewick is on a par to Le Mans 24hour?

My tent this year, supplied by Roebens, was super. The Klondike Bell tent, and allowed for my hanging rail table and chair to all fit perfectly with my new blow up bed.

Well back to restoring my own Series2a Land Rover now and organising a tidy little weekly column in Classic Car Weekly…
